Red Hawks fall in late innings to Western Oklahoma 3-9; Finish 3rd in the NJCAA World Series

Since the Red Hawks baseball team loaded onto the bus on a Wednesday night on May 6 to compete in the Region X Southeast District Tournament they have been away from home for 18 of the last 24 days.  During this time the team has played 9 games, played in 4 different venues, will travel over 3,000 miles and weathered a tropical storms, torrential downpours, flooding, and hail.  However the ride came to an early on Saturday at 12:30am with a 3-9 loss to #3 Western Oklahoma.

Western was able to strike first with a leadoff homerun in the top of the first.  A two out single scored a runner on second who had reached with a double off Norton.

The Red Hawks were able to add two more of their own runs in the bottom of the third.  A Randal Ortiz single with the bases loaded scored Trever Lee who reached on a single and Ivan Acuna who reached on a walk.

In the bottom of the fifth inning a solo homerun by Danny Sullivan, his fourth of the World Series, to give the Red Hawks their first lead of the game.

Western was able to tie the game when  a hit batter stole second, advanced to third on a groundout then scored on an infield single.

Western took the lead in the top of the seventh when the first two batters reached with a walk and a double to put runners on second and third. A double to the left field wall scored the first run and then an infield error allowed the second.   Western added their third run in the inning with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to hold a 6-3 lead.

Western added one more run to their lead in the eight with a two out single scoring a runner from third who reached on an infield single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a balk.

The Red Hawks had a chance to cut into the lead in the bottom of the eight with two leadoff singles my Ford and Andrew Meadows, but on a Meadows was hit by the ball on a Minton hit and Ford was thrown out at third after he over slid the base.

Western added two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth when a runner on third reached on a passed ball and a double to centerfield scored a runner on third.

Justin Norton (7-3) was the losing pitcher of the game going six innings and giving up five runs, four earned,  on 7 hits and posted four strikeouts.  Danny Sullivan, Randal Ortiz, Lou Matarazzo and Alex Minton each had two hits.  Danny Sullivan hit his fourth homerun of the World Series with a solo shot in the fifth inning.

The Red Hawks finished the season with a 39-19 record and finished the third place team at the World Series.
