HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — The 17th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College baseball team dropped its series finale with Wake Tech 8-5 on Sunday afternoon at Ting Stadium.

The loss for the Red Hawks (17-8, 4-2 in Region X) snaps a six-game winning streak, but CVCC still won the weekend series, 2-1.

Catawba Valley led 1-0 after a first-inning RBI single from Graham Mitchell scored Garrison Burress.

However, that lead would be short-lived, and the Eagles responded with four-straight runs, including a tying home run by Martin Muzik in the bottom of the first inning and a two-run single by Evan Maley and an RBI double by Niko Petrides in the bottom of the second inning.

The Red Hawks closed the gap to 4-2 after Rod Munoz scored on a double steal attempt in the top of the fourth inning.

Wake Tech would answer that CVCC score once again, plating three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, including RBI singles from Trevor Lesane, Vizcarron and Petrides.

Down six runs, Red Hawk catcher Brett Macchia attempted to spark a late comeback attempt in the eighth inning, connecting on his first collegiate home run — a two-run blast to right center field that scored himself and Mitchell.

Cory Watt also drove in a run on a groundout, but the eighth-inning rally was snuffed out after Muzik caught live ball foul tipped strike at home plate during Burress' at bat and threw out Cody Payne at third base.

Red Hawk batters were retired in order to end the game in the top of the ninth inning.

Catawba Valley starting pitcher Trae Starnes suffered the loss on the mound, allowing five hits, seven runs (six earned), four walks and striking out three batters.

The CVCC baseball team attempts to start a new winning streak when it returns to action on Wednesday for a Catawba County rivalry game with the Lenoir-Rhyne junior varsity team.

First pitch for the game, which is "Shuford Elementary School Night," is set for 6 p.m.
