HICKORY, N.C. — Despite a gritty effort during their run at the Region X/Southeast District tournament, the Catawba Valley Community College baseball team's season is over.
The Red Hawks won their third tournament game on Monday, ousting top seed Pitt before falling in their second game of the day to Patrick Henry in the double elimination tournament.
No. 4 Catawba Valley 10, No. 1 Pitt 1 (seven innings)
Scoring in all, but one inning of the contest, the Red Hawks used 15 hits at the plate and a dominant pitching performance by Matthew Dailey to run-rule the top-seeded Bulldogs on Monday afternoon in Burlington, N.C.
CVCC scored two runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings and added one run each in the second and seven innings in their nine-run victory.
Catcher Brett Macchia led the way for Catawba Valley, going 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. Cory Watt and Tyler Campbell also had two hits apiece, while Jimmy Marcelli and David Graves drove in two RBI each.
Dailey went the distance on the mound, giving up seven hits, one earned run, three walks and striking out seven batters to earn his fourth win of the season on the mound.

Playing its second game of the afternoon, the Red Hawks fell short against the Patriots in a season-ending loss in Burlington, N.C.
Willie Gordon powered the Red Hawks, driving in two runs on a double, and he also rounded the bases and scored on the hit due to a Patriot error in left field.
Garrison Burress and David Graves added two hits apiece for CVCC, and Burress also tallied one RBI.
All four of Catawba Valley's runs came during the second inning — a response to a four-run first inning by the Patriots.
Patrick Henry scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning and added one run each in the third and fifth innings to put the contest away.
The CVCC baseball team finishes its season with a 42-16 overall record. The 42 wins are the most by any team in program history, and this year's Red Hawk squad also set program records for runs (441), RBI (383), home runs (65) and strikeouts by a pitching staff (487).
