No. 19 Red Hawks’ win streak snapped in losses to Pats

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — The 19th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College baseball team had its 10-game winning streak snapped on Saturday with a pair of road conference losses against Patrick Henry at Hooker Field.

With the results of Saturday's games, the Red Hawks' record is now 13-4 overall and 3-2 in Region 10 play.

Game one: Patrick Henry 11, Catawba Valley 10 (nine innings)

Falling behind by seven runs early, a late rally by the Red Hawks fell short in a one-run loss to the Patriots in Saturday's opener.

First baseman James Hinson led Catawba Valley offensively, going 2-for-3 at the plate with two walks and three RBI.

CVCC second baseman Chandler Blackwelder added two hits — both doubles — and third baseman Jordan Montgomery and catcher Will Samuelson both drove in two runs each.

Patrick Henry grabbed control of Saturday's game with a five-run third inning, and the Patriots led 10-3 through the six complete innings.

Rallying late, Catawba Valley scored two runs in the seventh and ninth innings and three runs in the eighth inning to make it a one-run game during the final inning.

However, the Patriots were able to hold off the rally and close out the one-run victory in game one of the set.

Game two: Patrick Henry 5, Catawba Valley 4 (seven innings)

The Patriots scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come back late and defeat the Red Hawks in the night cap of Saturday's Region 10 doubleheader.

Second baseman Chandler Blackwelder and left fielder Jackson Brown both tallied two hits each to lead the Red Hawks. Blackwelder also drove in two runs.

On the mound, starting pitcher Andrew Dye allowed five hits, two earned runs, one walk and struck out four batters in his six-inning appearance.

The CVCC baseball team completes its three-game series against Patrick Henry on Sunday with a single nine-inning game. First pitch at Hooker Field is set for noon.
