Red Hawks sweep Titans, improve to 17-5 in conference play

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team swept a conference doubleheader against Guilford Tech on Sunday at Henkel-Alley Field.

The Red Hawks improve to 25-19 overall and 17-5 in Region 10 play.

Game one: Catawba Valley 9, Guilford Tech 4

Powered by the performances of left fielder Jack Stevens and pitcher Trace Baker, the Red Hawks took the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader in Hickory.

Despite giving up a first-inning home run, Baker settled in and retired 17 straight batters.

Baker pitched 7.1 innings and struck out a career high 13 batters to improve to 7-3 on the season. Ian Anderson closed out the final 1.2 innings of the contest.

Stevens went 6-for-6 at the plate with two doubles, a home run and two RBI to lead the Red Hawks offensively.

Elec Yount added two hits and three RBI for Catawba Valley, while Walker Waters tallied three hits in the Region 10 win.

Game two: Catawba Valley 7, Guilford Tech 2

The Red Hawks scored in five-straight innings to start Sunday's nightcap, earning the five-run win against the Titans.

CVCC right fielder Connor Bradley tallied a team-high three hits in the contest, including a home run.

Carter Lindsay and Elec Yount also homered — part of 10 hits for Catawba Valley in the contest.

Red Hawk pitchers Luke Osteen, J.D. Lewis, Kobie Cushing and Aiken Minton combined to allow seven hits and no walks. Lewis earned the victory in relief of Osteen.

The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team returns to action on Tuesday for a rivalry match up with Caldwell. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Henkel-Alley Field.
