Red Hawk baseball takes series opener against Lancers

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team won its opening series against USC Lancaster this past weekend, which was played at both Henkel-Alley Field at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds and at Bruin Field in Lancaster, S.C.

The Red Hawks (2-1) won both games at home on Saturday before falling in the series finale at USC Lancaster.

Game one: Catawba Valley 11, USC Lancaster 9 (nine innings)

The Red Hawks rallied with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Lancers by two runs in the opening game of the set on Saturday.

Carter Lindsay led the Red Hawks with a team-high three hits and two RBI. Connor Bradley and Cole Drewery also tallied two RBI apiece.

Red Hawks starting pitcher Matthew Hall allowed no hits, no runs and struck out two batters in three innings of work. Ethan Young earned the win in relief and Alex Sloan earned his first save of the season.

Game two: Catawba Valley 4, USC Lancaster 2 (seven innings)

The Red Hawks scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the Lancers in game two of the nightcap on Saturday in Hickory.

Jake Gorman, Kanyon Gagich, Zack Fike and J.T. Carter each drove in one run for Catawba Valley.

Catawba Valley starting pitcher Zac Martin allowed three hits, two runs, two walks and struck out two batters in three innings of work. Justin Webb earned the win in relief, striking out five batters.

Game three: USC Lancaster 15, Catawba Valley 8

Despite four hits and four RBI off the bat of Jake Gorman, the Red Hawks fell in the third game of the series on Sunday in Lancaster, S.C.

The Lancers (1-2) scored seven runs in the game's first five innings and added seven runs in the seventh inning to pull away for good in the contest.

Gorman's four-hit day was part of an 11-hit performance at the plate for the Red Hawks. Bryson Chandler and Cole Drewery tallied two hits each for CVCC. J.R. Dippold, Carter Lindsay, Gage Weaver and Drewery also drove in one run each.


The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team returns to action on Wednesday for a road doubleheader against Spartanburg Methodist. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
