Red Hawk baseball wins conference-opening series against Eagles

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team earned a series win in its conference opener this past weekend, taking two of three games against visiting Wake Tech at Henkel-Alley Field.

The Red Hawks improve to 6-6 on the season and 2-1 in Region 10 West Division play.

Game one: Catawba Valley 13, Wake Tech 10 (nine innings)

A six-run fourth inning powered the Red Hawks in a three-run victory against the Eagles in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Third baseman Jake Gorman led Catawba Valley with three hits, including a home run, and two RBI. Designated hitter Connor Bradley added two hits and a team-high three RBI, and first baseman Sam Stowe also connected on a home run and drove in two RBI.

On the mound, Red Hawk starting pitcher Matthew Hall earned his first win of the 2024 spring season. He allowed four hits, two earned runs, two walks and struck out four batters in four innings of work.

Game two: Catawba Valley 13, Wake Tech 12 (seven innings)

The Red Hawks scored 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to stun the Eagles and sweep Saturday's conference doubleheader.

Left fielder Cole Drewery had two big hits for the Red Hawks during that sixth inning, including an RBI double to get the comeback started with one out. His two-run, two-out single to left field put CVCC ahead for good in the game.

J.R. Dippold, Carter Lindsay and Jake Gorman also had an RBI single each during the Red Hawk rally, while Bryson Chandler and Zack Fike both brought home a run each on bases loaded walks.

Drewery finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored to go with his three RBIs. Dippold was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Chandler, Lindsay and Stowe also drove in two runs each for CVCC.

Red Hawk reliever Ethan Levy closed the door in the top of the seventh, allowing no hits and striking out one batter to earn his first win of the year and also seal the home team victory.

Game three: Wake Tech 19, Catawba Valley 5 (six innings)

The Eagles tallied 15 hits to take the final game of the conference set on Sunday against the Red Hawks.

Shortstop Eli Harpilani led CVCC with a double and two RBI, while left fielder Fabian Walker recorded a team-high two hits, including a double. Carter Lindsay and Jake Gorman also drove in one run each during the contest.


The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team returns to action on Wednesday for a road contest against Division I USC Sumter. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. in Clinton, S.C.
