Kris Harvey enters his eighth season as the pitching coach and first season as associate head baseball coach at Catawba Valley Community College in 2022-23.

Harvey is a Catawba County product who played his prep career at Bandys High School. After being originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the fifth round out of high school, Harvey decided to play collegiately at Clemson University for legendary coach Jack Leggett from 2003-05.

Harvey enjoyed a highly-decorated collegiate career. During his time at Clemson, Harvey helped guide the Tigers to three NCAA Regionals as well as a Super Regional in 2005.  During his junior season, Harvey hit .341 with 25 home runs, giving him his second consecutive First Team All-ACC selection, first team All-American honors and Clemson team MVP. He finished second in the nation in total home runs that season. 

After his successful junior season at Clemson, Harvey was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the second round of the 2005 MLB Draft. Harvey played eight minor league seasons where he started out as a position player before transitioning into pitching. Harvey was named to two All-Star teams during his professional career (2005, 2009). 

Converting from playing to coaching, Harvey was hired June 9, 2015 to serve as Catawba Valley's pitching coach.

In his first season, Harvey started to implement his philosphies that will serve the Red Hawk rotation for years to come. The Red Hawks were 23rd in the country in strikeouts and 22nd in strikeouts per nine innings in Harvey's first season on the coaching staff.

Red Hawk pitchers improved during Harvey's second season in 2017, finishing 10th in the nation in total strikeouts and 21st in strikeouts per nine innings.

During the 2018 campaign, Coach Harvey's staff flourished. They compiled 487 strikeouts, which was seventh-best in the country and a ERA of 3.91, which ranked 13th nationally. He coached left-handed pitcher Julian Smith, who was named the Region 10 Pitcher of the Year and later became the first MLB Draft pick selected directly from Catawba Valley when he was taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 15th round in June 2018.

While serving as the Recruiting Coordinator, he also recruited right-handed pitcher Zachary Hammer, who was selected in the 2018 MLB Draft by the New York Mets prior to enrolling at CVCC. 

With the guidance of Harvey, Red Hawk pitchers shattered the school record for strikeouts by a pitching staff (563) in 2019. He also coached two first-team All-Region pitchers in Blake Dockery and Logan Bender, who was named the Region 10 Pitcher of the Year. Both pitchers combined for 212 strikeouts and a microscopic 0.85 ERA.

Harvey currently runs a baseball academy with his father, Bryan — a two-time MLB All-Star and former Rolaids Relief Man Award winner. Excited about the opportunity to return to the college level, his goal is to continue to help the younger generation of baseball players in Catawba County strive and achieve their goals like he was able to. 

Harvey is married to his wife Caroline and has four children, including three daughters — 10-year-old Ella, 7-year-old Harper and 1-year-old Everly — and an 8-year-old son Cooper.

Harvey’s brother Hunter is currently a top pitching prospect in the Orioles organization.
