Angela Mayo, who is no stranger to the bass fishing world, was named the first-ever Red Hawks bass fishing coach on June 13, 2019.
 
A CVCC alumnus, Mayo has been participating on the Lady Bass Anglers Association Women's Pro Tour since 2014.

“As an alumni, I am excited to be returning to CVCC as the head coach of the Bass Fishing team,” Mayo said. “College bass fishing is a well-established sport at the collegiate level, but very few junior colleges are involved. The Catawba Valley area has a great pool of talented anglers that have grown up learning on our many diverse fisheries, and I looking forward to bringing some of these anglers together to help build this team into a nationally recognized program”

Last season, Mayo qualified for the North Carolina Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (BASS) State Team, and fishing in the BASS Eastern Regional, she qualified for the BASS Nation National Championship on Pickwick Lake in Alabama — becoming only second woman to ever qualify for championship.
 
This season, Mayo has already qualified for BASS Eastern Divisional tournament in Maine with a chance to return to the BASS Nation National Championship.
 
Off the water, Mayo spends her time working in the community, volunteering at the Bass Monkey Academy and teaching a class at Gander Outdoors for youth ages 7-17 interested in the sport of fishing.

She also is a member of Special Ops Survivors Outdoor Team, which provides support to spouses of Special Forces soldiers killed in action.  
 
“We are blessed to have a professional bass angler in Angela to start our bass fishing program,” said Catawba Valley Community College Athletic Director Nick Schroeder. “Her experience as well as her love for the local community and anglers makes her an ideal person to be leading our team to immediate success in the bass fishing world.”

Mayo will lead the new bass fishing this program, which has already signed three prospective anglers — the South Caldwell High School duo of Lane Bailey and Nathan Smith and North Lincoln High School angler Jeremy Dellinger.

The Catawba Valley bass fishing team will participate in the BASS and FLW collegiate series this year with the opportunity to qualify for the national championship.
 
Mayo holds her B.S. in Business Administration from University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and she currently works as a Legal Assistant to Forrest A. Ferrell, James U. Downs & Andrew J. Howell.

Mayo resides in Hickory with her husband, John, and her yellow lab, Pi. Her children are Ben Mayo, who serves in the United States Navy, and Erin Mayo Temple, who works as an adjunct professor at Durham Tech and Wake Tech.
