Total team effort leads Red Hawks in 93-70 win

HICKORY, N.C. — Behind a total team effort, the Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team erased a 15-point first-half deficit against Central Carolina Community College on Friday en route to a 93-70 win during the first day of the PDQ Classic at the Tarlton Complex.

Isayah Johnson scored 14 points and Victor Tshiona added 13 points in the win for the Red Hawks (4-6), who had six players reach double digits in scoring in the contest.

Caleb Bryson, Steve Ruszala, Dante Starr and Tyrell Ogelsby added 10 points apiece for Catawba Valley in its victory.

Trailing 19-4 in the first half, CVCC went on a 24-7 run to take control of the game for good against Central Carolina, and the Red Hawks outscored the Cougars 49-31 during the second half.

David Thompson scored 22 points to lead Central Carolina (8-8) on Friday.

The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday for the second and final day of the PDQ Classic. 

Following a 1 p.m. contest between Guilford Tech and Central Carolina, CVCC faces Johnston Community College at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Tarlton Complex.
