Red Hawks top Jaguars, earn sweep at PDQ Classic

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team made it two wins in as many days on Saturday, defeating visiting Johnston Community College 67-54 during the final day of the PDQ Classic.

Freshman post Isayah Johnson led the Red Hawks (5-6) for the second-straight day in scoring, tallying 19 points and finishing three points shy of his career high.

CVCC trailed 10-4 in the early stages of the first half before exploding to take a 32-22 lead by halftime.

The Jaguars (1-16) used a 14-4 run at the start of the second half to tie the contest at 36-36, but that is as close as they would get.

Johnson finished the game by scoring 12 points in the second half, powering CVCC to its second-straight victory.

Two other Red Hawk players reached double digits in scoring in the game — Tyrell Oglesby with 13 points and Steve Ruszala with 12 points.

Kenny Williams led Johnston in the contest with 11 points, while Demetrius Hall added 10 points.

The Red Hawks return to action on Tuesday for a home doubleheader that also features the CVCC women's basketball team. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
