Suggs-led Red Hawks top Vanguard, 88-83

HENDERSON, N.C. — Behind a career-best night from freshman Dorieon Suggs, the Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team snapped a three-game skid on Tuesday night, knocking off host Vance-Granville 88-83 at the Aycock Recreational Complex.

A 6-3 forward from Snow Hill, N.C., Suggs scored a career-high 14 points and added five rebounds, three steals and three drawn charges on defense, helping the Red Hawks improve to 7-9 overall and 2-5 in Region X play.

CVCC sophomores Caleb Bryson and Steve Ruszala also helped lead the charge with their veteran leadership.

A 6-0 guard from Blowing Rock, N.C., Bryson finished with a near triple double, scoring a career-high 12 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and making six assists in the contest.

Ruszala, a 6-7 forward from Waxhaw, N.C., recorded his fourth double double of the season and sixth of his CVCC basketball career, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

The Red Hawks and Vanguard (0-15, 0-9 in Region X) were deadlocked for most of the game with CVCC taking a 44-42 lead into the halftime break.

Catawba Valley began to distance itself by the midpoint of the second half, gaining a 68-58 lead with 8:16 to go in the contest.

However, Vance-Granville would fight back and cut a 13-point deficit down to just two points — 85-83 — with 17 seconds to go.

A missed 3-pointer by the Vanguard's Calvin Manley and a rebound by CVCC freshman Tyrell Oglesby helped the Red Hawks seal their second conference victory of the season.

CVCC was scheduled to travel to Bryant & Stratton College in Virginia Beach, Va. on Wednesday, but due to inclement weather in the forecast that game has been postponed to a later date.

The Red Hawks men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. when they host Lenoir Community College at the Tarlton Complex. Admission is free.
