Red Hawks come up short in loss to Bulldogs

HICKORY, N.C. — In a back-and-forth battle to the buzzer, the Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team fell 84-80 to visiting Pitt Community College at the Tarlton Complex on Monday night.

Guard Brandon Faison made a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left, lifting the Bulldogs past the Red Hawks for good in the game's closing moments.

Myles Williams (Morganton, N.C.) scored a career-high 21 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the Red Hawks (8-10, 3-6 in Region X).

Tyrell Oglesby (14 points) and Isayah Johnson (11 points) also reached double figures in scoring for CVCC.

Faison — the leading scorer in the nation among players at the NJCAA Division II level — scored 33 points to lead the Bulldogs (13-5, 6-4 in Region X) in the victory.

Down 37-34 at halftime, Faison scored 19 second-half points to lead the comeback charge, and Pitt forward Antonio Freeman added 13 of his 16 points in the second half.

The CVCC men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Raleigh to face off with Wake Tech at 6:30 p.m.
