Red Hawks thrash Tornados in season opener, 89-42

HICKORY, N.C. — Sophomores Everett Palmer and Jordan Powell combined to score 32 points, leading the Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team to an 89-42 victory against the Brevard JV team in the Red Hawks' season opener on Thursday at the Tarlton Complex.

A 6-foot-3 guard from Roxboro, N.C., Palmer easily eclipsed his previous career high of four points set late last season with a pair of made baskets in the early stages of Thursday's non-conference basketball game.

Twelve of Palmer's game-high 17 points came from behind the 3-point line. He connected on 4-of-7 shots from behind the arc.

Powell — a transfer from Hill College — scored all 15 of his points in Thursday's game during the first half, helping the Red Hawks (1-0) pull ahead by a 52-17 margin at halftime.

All 18 members of the Catawba Valley roster saw playing time on Thursday, and 16 of those athletes scored at least two points in the contest, including Quade Parks with eight points and Jonathan McFall with seven points.

Jamal DeShields-Beard and Cameron Ellis scored 12 points apiece to pace the Tornados, who were outscored 37-25 by Catawba Valley in the second half of the game.

The CVCC men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest against the Limestone JV team.
