Red Hawks top Saints, improve to 5-1 on season

GAFFNEY, S.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team improved to 5-1 on the season with a thrilling 86-84 road victory on Sunday night against the Limestone JV squad.

Jordan Powell and Dezure Moulden powered the Red Hawks in their fifth victory of the 2018-19 season, scoring 18 and 17 points each, respectively.

Despite 11 points in the first half from sophomore forward Isayah Johnson, Catawba Valley trailed Limestone 42-41 at halftime of Sunday's non-conference contest. Johnson — the Red Hawks' leading scorer and rebounder this season — finished Sunday's game with 15 points.

In the second half, Powell (12 points) and Moulden (15) combined to score 27 of their 35 combined points during the half, leading the second-half surge for CVCC.

Byron Sanders also reached double figures in scoring for the Red Hawks, tallying 10 points against the Saints. It was Sanders' first game with 10 or more points this season.

Christian Miller-Caldwell scored 22 points to lead Limestone — one of three Saints to reach double figures in scoring, including Miguel Diaz (17 points) and Aron Lane-Scott (16 points).

Off to its best start since the 2012-13 season, the CVCC men's basketball team returns to the court on Wednesday for its second game of the season against crosstown rivalry against Caldwell CC&TI. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
