Red Hawks trounce Titans for third Region X win

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team snapped a three-game skid on Wednesday night, knocking off conference foe Guilford Tech 93-79 at the Tarlton Complex.

Adding to his career-best 32-point performance on Sunday, CVCC sophomore forward Jordan Powell scored a team-high 29 points in Wednesday's conference game — his fifth 20-point game of the season. He also recorded eight rebounds and three blocks.

CVCC (11-4, 3-3 in Region X) led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but Guilford Tech (11-3, 5-2) went on a 14-2 run to pull within 27-26 with just over three minutes left until halftime.

The Red Hawks re-expanded their advantage to double digits with a late first-half run, which included a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by forward Isayah Johnson, to pull ahead 40-30 at halftime.

Powell scored 15 points in the second half, helping Catawba Valley grow its advantage against Guilford Tech en route to the 14-point conference victory. The Red Hawks led by as many as 28 points during the second half.

Sal-Bey Young added seven points and 11 rebounds in the win for CVCC, while Zach De La Cruz and Isayah Johnson both reached double figures in scoring with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The CVCC men's basketball team will try to stretch its win streak to two games when it travels Saturday to take on Fayetteville Tech. Tip off in Fayetteville, N.C. is set for 3 p.m.
