Cruz’s career-high 22 not enough in 98-95 road loss

NORFOLK, Va. — The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team dropped its third-straight road game on Saturday, falling 98-95 to Bryant & Stratton (Va.) at Maury High School.

Freshman guard Zach De La Cruz scored a career-high 22 points in the contest for Catawba Valley, including six made 3-pointers. Sal-Bey Young (13 points), Victor Tshiona (13) and Jordan Powell (11) also reached double figures in scoring for CVCC.

The Red Hawks (16-8, 8-7 in Region X) fell behind 48-39 to the Bobcats at halftime of Saturday's conference tilt. De La Cruz scored nine first-half points to lead CVCC.

Tahjay Jacobs and Leland Richardson led the first half charge for Bryant & Stratton (6-16, 6-8), scoring a combined 25 points to help their team gain an early nine-point advantage.

Despite a 56-point second half scoring burst, which included six made 3-pointers, the Red Hawks surrendered 50 points to the Bobcats, coming up just short in a difficult three-point conference loss.

Jacobs scored 25 points to lead Bryant & Stratton in its victory, while Richardson wasn't far behind with 23 points.

The CVCC men's basketball team will try to end its recent skid with a road contest on Wednesday at Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville, Va. Tip off between the Red Hawks and Patriots is set for 7 p.m.
