Red Hawks reach 20 wins for first time since ’15-16

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball won its fourth-straight game on Thursday night, knocking off visiting Patrick Henry Community College 95-70 at the Tarlton Complex.

With the victory, the Red Hawks improve to 20-8 overall and 12-7 in Region X play — the first time the program has reached the 20-win plateau since the 2015-16 season and only the third time ever its reached that mark.

Freshman forward Sal-Bey Young scored a career high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his second career double double at CVCC.

Down 18-15 during the middle stages of the first half, the Red Hawks used a 9-0 run to eventually catapult into a 38-31 halftime lead.

Young and teammate Jahleer Black led the Red Hawks in the first half with nine points apiece.

Coming out of the break, Catawba Valley clamped down on defense to start the second half, holding the Patriots (11-14, 7-12) to just five points in the first five minutes, 37 seconds of the half.

With just over 10 minutes left in the second half, CVCC pulled away for good in the contest by outscoring PHCC 19-10 during a four-minute stretch.

Sophomore forward Jordan Powell guided the Red Hawks during the second half with 14 of his 17 points, while Young wasn't far behind with 13 second-half points.

Tankey Williams scored 19 points to pace Patrick Henry (11-14, 7-12 in Region X) in Thursday's conference game, and teammates Anthony Taylor (16 points) and Jaylen Dillard (13 points) also reached double figures in scoring.

The CVCC men's basketball team closes out its regular season on Saturday with a home conference contest against Fayetteville Tech. The Red Hawks will also host its annual "Sophomore Day" festivities at the game.

Tip off between the Red Hawks and Trojans is set for 3 p.m. at the Tarlton Complex. Admission is free.
