James’ late lay up lifts Red Hawks past Cougars

SANFORD, N.C. — A lay up by Jeremiah Jones with one second remaining was the difference maker for the Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team in its 83-82 road conference victory against Central Carolina on Wednesday night.

The Cougars led 82-81 with 14.6 seconds remaining and had an opportunity to extend their lead at the free throw line, but the Red Hawks' Jayden Birchfield rebounded the missed attempt at a 1-and-1.

Driving up the court after the miss, the basketball eventually found its way into the hands of Jones, who put up the game-clinching basket for CVCC.

Benton Wofford and Jayden Birchfield scored 15 points each to lead Catawba Valley in the victory. Justice Pryor (14 points) and Malik Hamrick (10 points) also reached double digits in scoring for the Red Hawks.
