Red Hawk men’s hoops advances to Region 10 quarterfinals

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team earned a 107-101 overtime win against Central Carolina on Monday at the Tarlton Complex.

With the victory, the Red Hawks advance to the Region 10 quarterfinals where they will face top seed Davidson-Davie on Thursday at noon. The tournament is being held at Cape Fear Community College.

Jeremiah Jones led Catawba Valley in Monday's tournament victory with a team-high 17 points.

He was one of six Red Hawks who reached double figures in scoring, including Nasim Fuller (15 points), Malik Hamrick (15), Daeshaun Ross (11), Justice Pryor (10) and Benton Wofford (10).

Catawba Valley led 51-39 at halftime, but went scoreless in the game's final 3:41, which allowed the Cougars to come back and tie the contest at the end of regulation.

In the extra session, the Red Hawks were able to grab the lead early and make nine of their 12 free throw attempts down the stretch to hold on for the tournament win.

Women's basketball: Guilford Tech 72, Catawba Valley 52

The Red Hawks had their season ended in the first round of the Region 10 tournament by the Titans on Monday at the Tarlton Complex.

Sabrina Lewis led the Red Hawks (11-19) with 23 points, while Alexia Cunningham recorded her 14th double double of the season with 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Catawba Valley led 14-12 after the first quarter, but was outscored 24-8 during the second quarter and could not overcome that deficit.
