Red Hawks tally 51 runs, 60 hits in series sweep against Flying Eagles

CEDAR BLUFF, Va. — The Catawba Valley Community College softball team swept a three-game conference road series with Southwest Virginia on Saturday and Sunday.

With the three victories, the Red Hawks improve to 7-2 on the season and 7-2 in Region 10 play.

Game one: Catawba Valley 13, Southwest Virginia 0

The Red Hawks tallied 15 hits, including four each off the bats of catcher Kayla Hollar and designated player Tristan Smalling, in a five-inning victory against the Flying Eagles in Saturday's series opener.

Hollar went 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI, while Smalling also went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a team-high three RBI.

On the mound, Red Hawk starting pitcher Mayson Lail earned her second win of the spring. She allowed three hits, two walks and struck out four batters in five innings of work.

Game two: Catawba Valley 16, Southwest Virginia 0

CVCC opened Sunday's doubleheader with 19 hits, including a team-high four off the bat of third baseman Chesney Stikeleather, in a five-inning win against SWCC.

The Red Hawks scored all 16 of their runs during the first three innings of the game, including 11 runs scored in the third inning.

Hollar drove in a team-high four runs on three hits, Stikeleather drove in three runs and teammates Macey Pennell, Rileigh Farr and Tristan Smalling each drove in two runs.

Smalling earned the win on the mound. She allowed one Southwest Virginia hit, gave up no walks and struck out four batters.

Game three: Catawba Valley 22, Southwest Virginia 5

The Red Hawks closed out the conference series sweep with a 22-run, 26-hit performance in Sunday's finale against the Flying Eagles.

Abby Teague led Catawba Valley with a 5-for-5 day at the plate. Kameron Bolick added four hits and seven RBI.

Seven Red Hawk batters had at least two hits in Sunday's series finale, including Macey Pennell (3), Miranda Valerio (2), Kayla Hollar (2), Chesney Stikeleather (3), Rileigh Farr (4), Bolick (4) and Teague (5).

On the mound, Red Hawk pitchers Rileigh Farr and Mayson Lail combined to give up five hits, five runs (three earned), five walks and record seven strikeouts.


The Catawba Valley Community College softball team returns to action on Tuesday for a home doubleheader against rival Caldwell. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Stanford Park in Hickory.
