Red Hawk softball sweeps doubleheader against Cobras

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College softball team swept a home doubleheader against rival Caldwell on Tuesday afternoon at Stanford Park.

With the victories, the Red Hawks improve to 9-2 overall.

Game 1: Catawba Valley 2, Caldwell 1

A sixth-inning home run by Kayla Hollar lifted the Red Hawks past the Cobras in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader.

Hollar and Chesney Stikeleather both connected on solo home runs during the contest for the Red Hawks.

On the mound, Red Hawk starting pitcher Mayson Lail allowed just one hit, two walks and struck out a season-high 10 batters in seven innings. She improves to 3-2 on the season.

Game 2: Catawba Valley 6, Caldwell 5

The Red Hawks scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun the Cobras and complete Tuesday's doubleheader sweep at Stanford Park.

Rileigh Farr's RBI single to left field scored Kayla Hollar for the game-winning run in the seventh inning. Hollar's two-run double earlier in the inning scored Macey Pennell and Zauryn Moore to tie the contest.

Farr led the Red Hawks in the contest with a team-high three RBI on two hits, while Hollar went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Chesney Stikeleather also tallied two hits and drove in a run, and Pennell recorded two hits.

Mayson Lail earned the win on the mound in relief. She allowed no runs, no hits and struck out four batters in 2.1 innings to improve to 4-2 on the spring.

The Catawba Valley Community College softball team returns to action on Friday with a home conference doubleheader against Southeastern Community College. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. at Stanford Park.
