CVCC Hosts the Region X Women's Basketball Tournament Mar 9-11

HICKORY, NC. – Catawba Valley Community College will be hosting the 2017 Region 10 / District J Women's Basketball Tournament on Thursday, March 9th through Saturday, March 11th at the Tarlton Complex on the CVCC campus. 

The Red Hawks finished their regular season with an overall record of 20-7, including 12-6 in Region 10 play.  The Red Hawks claimed the No. 5 seed and will play No. 4 Bryant & Stratton College (20-9, 12-6) in a tournament quarterfinal contest on Thursday, March 9th at 12 pm.  The Red Hawks split with Bryant & Stratton on the season and lost the tiebreaker for the 4 seed by Bryant & Stratton having a better quality win over the #2 seed Guilford Tech in the regular season. 

The Region 10 Tournament is made up of eight teams from North Carolina and Virginia.  The #1 seed for the tournament is #14 nationally ranked Cape Fear (NC) Community College.  The #12 ranked nationally team Guilford Technical (NC) Community College holds the #2 seed, while the #3 seed Louisburg (NC) College is ranked #17 nationally.  The following seeds are #4 Bryant & Stratton (VA) College, #5 Catawba Valley, #6 Wake Technical (NC) Community College and #7 Patrick Henry (VA) Community College.  There is a play in game tonight where #8 Lenoir (NC) Community College will play #9 Brunswick (NC) Community College at Lenoir CC in Kinston, NC for the final spot in the tournament.  

Catawba Valley clinched a 20 win season by defeating #17 ranked Louisburg at home in their last game of the season, the marks the first 20 win season since 2013/14 for the Red Hawks.   Catawba Valley has been led by 3 double digit scorers.  Freshman guard Shaniya Lester leads the team by scoring 15.0 points per game while grabbing 4.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists per game and leading the team in 2.1 steals per game.  Sophomore forward Jala Daniels averages 12.0 points and leads the team with 7.5 rebounds per game while being the only player to start all 27 games this season.  Fellow sophomore guard Ieshia Love is averaging 10.7 points with 3.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.
