HICKORY, N.C. — Quiet on the court, A'Liyah Woods let her play do all of the talking.

Now, the Catawba Valley Community College sophomore guard will continue her athletic career at Greensboro College after signing with the Pride on Wednesday.

"Greensboro College is receiving a jewel. She is a steal," said CVCC women's basketball coach Tisha England of Woods. "A'Liyah can play. She's very quick and can shoot. Each day when I see her do workouts, she's getting better at shooting. I'm proud of her. Whether one person goes or nobody goes to workout, A'Liyah is going to the gym. That tells you something about her."

Woods made a vast improvement from her freshman to sophomore seasons at CVCC.

After averaging 3.9 points per game in 20 games played as a freshman, the 5-foot-6 guard from Gastonia, N.C. started in 26 of the Red Hawks' 27 games on the basketball court last fall, averaging 9.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists per contest as a sophomore.

The former Ashbrook High School standout played her best this past season during Region X play, where she averaged 10.3 points per game.

Wood's top performance during her sophomore season came on Nov. 19, 2016 when she scored 22 points in a 82-59 road victory at Lenoir Community College.

"A'Liyah is probably the most improved player here in CVCC history," England said. "That lets you know that she came and worked very hard. She put the time into it and the work ethic into it. She became a phenomenal player this year."

Behind Woods, the Red Hawks finished their season 21-8 overall and 14-6 in Region X play.

The daughter of Tonia Adams and Derwin Woods, Woods is the third member of the 2016-17 CVCC women's basketball team to continue their athletic career by signing with a four-year institution.

Last month, sophomore point guard Ieshia Love signed with UNC-Pembroke and sophomore forward Jala Daniels signed with Montreat College.
