Red Hawks lose first conference game in OT to Titans

JAMESTOWN, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team suffered its first conference loss of the season in heartbreaking fashion on Tuesday night, falling 87-84 in overtime on the road to Guilford Tech.

The Red Hawks (11-4, 6-1 in Region X) were plagued by 37 team fouls in the game, which led to 51 free throw attempts and 29 made free throws for the Titans. There were a total of 61 fouls in Tuesday night's game.

Despite those fouls, CVCC would gain the advantage late in the game and lead 73-69 with 54.1 seconds left in the contest. However, Guilford Tech guard J'Nai Millner would rally the Titans (11-3, 8-3 in Region X) back to tie the contest 76-76 by the end of regulation.

In the extra session, the Titans' Jada Faison would score five points and Miller added four points — all on free throws — to help propel Guilford Tech to the win.

Nikkyana McCaskill scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Red Hawks — the first 20-point performance in the career of the sophomore from Gastonia, N.C.

Fellow Red Hawk sophomore Shaniya Lester scored 21 points, recording her team-leading sixth 20-point performance of the season.

The CVCC women's basketball team will attempt to bounce back on Thursday night at 6 p.m. when it hosts Louisburg College at the Tarlton Complex. Admission to the game is free.
