Lester’s career-high 31 lifts CVCC past Louisburg

HICKORY, N.C. — Shaniya Lester scored her career high of 27 points four different times during her Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball career.

On Thursday, Lester finally eclipsed that mark, notching 31 points in a 95-69 victory for the Red Hawks against Louisburg College at the Tarlton Complex.

It marked the first time since Nov. 2, 2014 that a CVCC women's basketball player scored more than 30 points in a contest (Keyara McKnight, 31).

"We needed to get this win," Lester said. "We needed to bounce back from our last loss. That wasn't a good feeling. We didn't want to feel that again. I wanted to come in here and make sure I finished on every shot I put up."

Sophomore Tanisha Wall added 20 points for CVCC — finishing three points shy of her career high — and freshman forward Zharia Brown recorded a double double — 14 points and 10 rebounds — for CVCC, which improved to 12-4 overall and 7-1 in Region X play.

Thursday's game was the first for CVCC assistant women's basketball coach Tyra Carver against her former team. Carver coached women's basketball last season as an assistant at Louisburg.

"It was difficult at first because as a coach you build relationships with players," Carver said of Thursday's game. "It was a little weird being on the other side because I coached them for a year, but I'm excited where I'm at. I'm happy for our team. I enjoyed the win tonight."

The Red Hawks held a 46-38 halftime lead and expanded that to a 69-58 lead after three quarters.

CVCC exploded offensively in the fourth and final quarter, outscoring the Hurricanes, 26-11. Wall led the Red Hawks in the fourth quarter with nine points, while Lester added seven fourth-quarter points.

Yatte Melvin paced Louisburg (13-3, 9-3 in Region X) with 16 points, while teammate Teana Lewis added 14 points.

The CVCC women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Wake Tech at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
