Red Hawks reach century mark in win against Clinton

HICKORY, N.C. — The 18th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team reached the century mark for the second time this season on Saturday, defeating Clinton Junior College 100-56 at the Tarlton Complex.

Sophomore guard Shaniya Lester (Charlotte, N.C.) scored 20 or more points for the fourth-straight game, notching 21 points in the victory for the Red Hawks, who improve to 14-4 overall and 9-1 in Region X play.

CVCC freshman post player Zharia Brown added 19 points — setting a new career high in scoring — and four other Red Hawks reached double figures, including Nikkyana McCaskill (14 points), Tanisha Wall (13 points), Joyous Wilson (12 points) and Jada Reid (12 points).

After gaining a 29-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, Catawba Valley started the second quarter on a 14-0 run to distant itself from the Golden Bears (5-10, 5-7 in Region X) for good in the contest.

Jada Reid's lay up with 38.3 seconds left in the game puts the Red Hawks over the century mark for the second time this season and for the first time since a season-opening 112-30 victory against the North Greenville JV squad.

Tanaja Steveson led Clinton with 25 points in Saturday's game.

The CVCC women's basketball team returns to action on Thursday with a road game against Patrick Henry Community College. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
