Lester, No. 17 Red Hawks top Wake Tech, 83-66

RALEIGH, N.C. — The 17th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team kept its winning streak in tact on Saturday, knocking off host Wake Tech, 83-66.

Shaniya Lester scored 20 points to lead the Red Hawks (19-4, 14-1 in Region X), who won their eighth-straight contest this season.

Three other Catawba Valley basketball players also reached double figures in scoring, including Zharia Brown with 16 points and Tory Agrusa and Tanisha Wall with 13 points each.

Wake Tech, which drops to 10-12 overall and 6-11 in Region X play, was led by Myrayna Watkins' 20 points.

The Red Hawks pulled ahead of the Eagles 40-29 at halftime behind seven points from Lester and six points from Brown.

Free throw shooting was critical for Catawba Valley down the stretch, and the Red Hawks made 14 of their 18 attempts from the line to maintain their advantage on their way to the Region X win.

It's a short break for the CVCC women's basketball team, which returns to action on Sunday for a road conference contest against Lenoir Community College in Lenoir, N.C. Tip off is slated for 2 p.m.
