WILMINGTON, N.C. — The 15th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team lost to No. 8 Cape Fear on the road Saturday in a match up of top teams in the Region X standings.
The Red Hawks (21-5, 16-2 in Region X) were doomed in the contest by 20 turnovers, including 12 of them in the first half, helping Cape Fear (23-5, 21-1 in Region X) quickly seize a 39-24 lead at halftime.
Catawba Valley managed to outscore Cape Fear 37-31 in the second half of the contest, but could not overcome their early deficit. The loss by CVCC snapped its 10-game winning streak.
Tory Agrusa paced the Red Hawks in Saturday's game, scoring 19 points, while Zharia Brown added 13 points.
A'Terria Quick scored a team-high 16 points for Cape Fear, while Madison Ervin (13 points) and Christina Caesar (10 points) also reached double figures in scoring for the Sea Devils.
The CVCC women's basketball team returns to the court on Monday for a conference contest against Johnston Community College. Tip off is slated for 5 p.m. at the Tarlton Complex. Admission is free.
