Red Hawks blast past Jaguars, 103-38

HICKORY, N.C. — The 15th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team returned to its winning ways on Monday afternoon, defeating Johnston Community College 103-38 at the Tarlton Complex.

Shaniya Lester paced the Red Hawks (22-5, 17-2 in Region X), scoring a team-high 21 points in the contest.

Lester was one of six CVCC women's basketball players to reach double figures in Monday's conference game, including Zharia Brown (17 points), Tory Agrusa (17 points), Tanisha Wall (15 points) and Nikkyana McCaskill (12 points).

The 100-point performance by the CVCC women's basketball team is its fifth this season and second in three games.

Catawba Valley pulled ahead 45-16 by halftime — led by nine first-half points from Lester.

The Red Hawks exploded out of the halftime break, scoring 33 points in the third quarter — the second-highest scoring output in a quarter this season.

McCaskill's lay up with one minute, 35 seconds left in the game helped put Catawba Valley over the century mark.

Ariana Huskey paced the Jaguars (9-17, 4-16 in Region X) with 11 points, while Tacoya Allen added nine points.

The CVCC women's basketball team returns to the court on Thursday for "Sophomore Night" and its final home game of the regular season against Lenoir Community College. Tip off is slated for 5 p.m. at the Tarlton Complex, and admission is free.
