Red Hawks rout Lancers 96-47 on ‘Sophomore Night’

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team celebrated the careers of its five sophomores in style on Thursday, defeating Lenoir Community College 96-47 in the final regular-season home game at the Tarlton Complex.

Shaniya Lester led CVCC (23-5, 18-2 in Region X) with 30 points — one point off her career high in scoring — and fellow sophomore Joyous Wilson tied her career high with 18 points.

Tanisha Wall — a third Red Hawk sophomore — recorded her ninth career double double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Catawba Valley was effective in moving the basketball in Thursday's game, tallying 33 assists, including a team-high 10 assists from sophomore Nikkyana McCaskill and seven assists from sophomore Tory Agrusa.

The Red Hawks pulled out to a 50-19 lead at halftime, outscoring the Lancers (3-21, 1-21 in Region X) 30-8 in the second quarter. Lester led the way in the first half with a team-best 14 points.

In the second half, CVCC outscored Lenoir 46-28 on its way to picking up its 18th conference win of the season.

Justice Carr paced Lenoir with 15 points and Dellasia Freeman added 10 points

The CVCC women's basketball team closes out its regular season with a pair of road games on Saturday and Sunday.

The Red Hawks travel to Leland, N.C. for a conference road game against Brunswick Community College at 4 p.m. Saturday before facing off with Johnston Community College for a 2 p.m. contest on Sunday.
