Catawba Valley women’s hoops adds Cougars’ Miller

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball program has announced the addition of Alexander Central High School standout KeyKey Miller to its 2018-19 line up.

Miller signed with the Red Hawks during a special ceremony held on Friday at the Tarlton Complex.

"It's a blessing to be able to play at the next level," Miller said. "I'm excited for the season to start and to be able to prepare to move on to a four-year afterwards. It doesn't feel real that I'm about to play college basketball, but I'm excited and nervous because all eyes are going to be on me."

A two-time All-Northwestern 3A/4A selection, Miller was a captain for the Cougars this past winter as a three-year varsity player under head coach Jonathan Winkler.

She averaged 13.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.4 assists during her senior campaign at ACHS, and she finished her Cougar career with 650 points, 245 rebounds, 86 assists and 89 steals.

"I'm excited to have her," England said of the addition of Miller to her program. "I saw her throughout the year, and she's just a go-getter. I love her attitude. She's very coachable and very respectful. We are needing kids that come in and want to learn more of the game and get better. She's going to bring great assets to the team with her quickness and with her ball handling. She can shoot. I'm excited about having her come be a part of our program."

Miller came to the Red Hawks' try outs last month, which allowed England to get a better look at the 5-foot-5 guard.

"I first found out about the try outs from my aunt," Miller said. "She was telling me that I should go and try out. I came, and that's when I met coach (Tisha) England for the first time. She was very welcoming. Coming in and meeting the players, they were also welcoming. Working out was tough, but I knew they were all about business."

Miller's travel coach, Cleon Cook, was also a key voice in pushing Miller to try out at CVCC.

"It's exciting opportunity for her," said Cook, who coaches the Carolina Express travel basketball program. "I'm excited for her. She's like a daughter to me. I'm glad that she's close so I can drop in and check in her all of the time. It's a great opportunity for her to be a student first and then come out and be an athlete. The sky is the limit for her."

The first recruit in the 2018-19 class, Miller joins a Red Hawk women's basketball program that is coming off one of its best seasons ever, finishing 27-5 overall and 20-2 in Region X play.
