Red Hawks drop home opener to Golden Bears

HICKORY, N.C. — The 16th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team had its home opener spoiled on Tuesday night at the hands of visiting Clinton Community College, who delivered the Red Hawks a 79-56 setback at the Tarlton Complex.

CVCC (1-1, 0-1 in Region X) committed 30 turnovers in the contest, which led to the Red Hawks' first 20-point loss at home in conference play under sixth-year head coach Tisha England.

Leading 18-16 after the first quarter, the Golden Bears used a 15-0 run to start the second quarter to gain a double digit lead in Tuesday's Region X game that it did not surrender.

Tee Dorsey led Clinton (2-1, 2-0 in Region X) with a game-high 24 points, while Briunna Anderson added 14 points.

Sherry Johnson and Zharia Brown both scored 14 points apiece to pace Catawba Valley, with trailed 42-30 at halftime.

The CVCC women's basketball team will try to bounce back when it returns to action on Thursday for the second of three-straight home games.

The Red Hawks welcome the Montreat junior varsity squad — who they beat 59-47 in their season opener last Thursday — for a 6 p.m. contest at the Tarlton Complex.
