Red Hawks topple Trojans 84-44, improve to 6-1

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team overcame a slow start on Saturday, erupting in the second half on its way to an 84-44 victory against visiting Fayetteville Tech at the Tarlton Complex.

Sophomore forward Sherry Johnson paced the Red Hawks (6-1, 2-1 in Region X), scoring a season-high 29 points — her sixth-straight game with at least 20 points scored.

Plagued by 19 first-half turnovers, CVCC led Fayetteville by just four points at halftime, 34-30.

However, the Red Hawks responded out of the break, outscoring the Trojans 22-11 during the third quarter. Ivy Eller helped lead the charge with six points in the quarter, while Sherry Johnson and Iyonna Harris added four points.

Catawba Valley would go on to outscore Fayetteville Tech 50-14 in the second half.

Eller added 16 points in the game for the Red Hawks, while Zharia Brown scored 13 points.

Kiana Gravely scored 14 points to lead Fayetteville Tech (5-2, 4-2 in Region X).

The CVCC women's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday for a road non-conference contest against Division I foe Walters State. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. in Morristown, Tenn.
