Red Hawks start slow, finish strong in 68-38 win

JAMESTOWN, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team won its second-straight conference game on Thursday night, overcoming a slow start to defeat Guilford Tech 68-38 at the Mary Perry Ragsdale YMCA.

Sherry Johnson scored a team-high 26 points for the Red Hawks, who improve to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in Region X play. The 20-point performance by Johnson is her seventh so far this season.

CVCC trailed 25-24 at halftime against Guilford Tech (4-8, 1-6), but responded quickly out of the break by outscoring the Titans 23-3 during the third quarter.

Johnson helped lead the third-quarter charge with 12 points.

The Red Hawks would go on to outscore the Titans 44-13 in the second half of the contest en route to the 30-point victory.

Milequa Eason and Ivy Eller added eight and seven points respectively in the win for Catawba Valley.

J'hai Millner scored 16 points to lead Guilford Tech.

The CVCC women's basketball team returns to action on Sunday for a home conference contest against Lenoir. Tip off is slated for 2 p.m at the Tarlton Complex.
