Red Hawks hammer Hurricanes for fifth-straight win

LOUISBURG, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team stretched its winning streak to five games on Tuesday with an 87-56 road conference victory against Louisburg at the Roger Taylor Arena.

Sherry Johnson led the Red Hawks (12-4, 7-2 in Region X) with 25 points — her ninth 20-point scoring performance this season — while fellow sophomore Danielle Rainey added a career-high 17 points.

Catawba Valley exploded out of the gates against Louisburg (14-4, 7-4), gaining a 27-13 lead after the first quarter of Tuesday's contest. However the Hurricanes roared back in the second quarter to pull within 38-32 of the Red Hawks by halftime.

Erupting out of the halftime break, CVCC outscored Louisburg 29-15 during the third quarter to pull ahead for good in the contest. Johnson and Rainey led the charge with eight points each during the frame.

The Red Hawks would go on to outscore the Hurricanes 49-26 during the second half en route to their seventh conference win of the 2018-19 campaign.

Forward Zharia Brown also reached double figures in scoring for Catawba Valley with 15 points and guards Milequa Eason and Taziah Hardin added eight points apiece.

The CVCC women's basketball team will try to stretch its winning streak to six games on Friday when it hosts another conference foe in Brunswick. Tip off between the Red Hawks and Dolphins is set for 6 p.m. at the Tarlton Complex.
