Johnson scores 30, Red Hawks win 11th in a row

KINSTON, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team won its 11th straight game on Sunday, defeating Lenoir Community College 78-41 at Coach Bobby Dawson Court.

Sophomore forward Sherry Johnson scored 30 points to lead the Red Hawks (19-3, 13-1 in Region X) — her second 30-point game this week.

The Red Hawks took a 20-11 lead after the first quarter and held the Lancers to just five points in the second quarter to go ahead 36-16 at halftime.

CVCC scored at least 20 points in each of the third and fourth quarters, and the Red Hawks' defense gave up just 25 second-half points to the Lancers in their 37-point conference win.

Ivy Eller and Zharia Brown also reached double figures in scoring for Catawba Valley with 13 points apiece, while Aniya Taylor added 12 points.

Chrystall Jerome and Tammaria Smith led the Lancers with 11 points apiece.

The CVCC women's basketball team tries to extend the winning streak to 12 games on Friday when it returns home for a conference game against Guilford Tech. Tip off between the Red Hawks and Titans is set for 6 p.m.
