Cunningham sets rebounding records in Red Hawks’ 70-50 win

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College men's and women's basketball teams split a home conference doubleheader against Cleveland Community College on Tuesday at the Tarlton Complex.

Women's basketball: Catawba Valley 70, Cleveland 50

Sophomore forward Alexia Cunningham broke both the school single-season and career rebounding records in a 20-point win for the Red Hawks against the Yetis in Region 10 play.

Cunningham currently leads all National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II women's basketball players in total rebounds (321).

Rylie Hogg led Catawba Valley (8-14, 6-11 in Region 10) with 23 points off the bench. Teammates Sabrina Lewis (11 points, 19 rebounds), Cunningham (14 points, 17 rebounds) and Anayah Turner (11 points, 10 rebounds) each recorded a double-double each in the game.

CVCC trailed Cleveland 14-10 after the first quarter, but outscored the Yetis 22-7 in the second quarter to pull ahead for good in the conference contest en route to the 20-point victory.

Men's basketball: Cleveland 98, Catawba Valley 84

The Red Hawks couldn't overcome an early first-half deficit in a 14 point-loss against the Yetis at the Tarlton Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

Benton Wofford led Catawba Valley (8-12, 7-9 in Region 10) in the game with 18 points. Nasim Fuller (17 points), Malik Hamrick (12 points) and Justice Pryor (11 points) also reached double figures in scoring in the game.


The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team returns to action on Thursday for a road conference contest against Johnston Community College. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. in Smithfield, N.C.

The Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team is back on the court on Friday for a home conference game against Brunswick. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. at the Tarlton Complex. Admission is $5. Faculty, staff and students are admitted free with ID.
