Red Hawks earn split on first day of Valley Invitational

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team split its two games in the first day of the Valley Invitational on Friday at the Tarlton Complex.

The No. 17 Red Hawks earned a thrilling 3-2 victory against No. 12 Pasco-Hernando in their first game of the day before falling 3-0 to Division I Wallace State (Ala.) in the nightcap.

Behind Adair Melton's 16 kills, the Red Hawks earned a ranked victory against the visiting Bobcats on Friday afternoon in the Tarlton Complex.

Set scores were 25-23, 23-25, 25-27, 25-20 and 19-17.

With the match tied 2-2, Catawba Valley rallied from down 13-8 in set five to win 11 of the final 15 points to claim the match victory.

Karsyn Mundy added 12 kills for CVCC (16-3), while Sabrina Pinard drove down nine kills.

Wallace State 3, No. 17 CVCC 0

The Red Hawks had their 14-match win streak snapped at the hands of the Lions on Friday night.

Set scores were 25-17, 27-25 and 25-18.

Sabrina Pinard paced CVCC (16-4) with seven kills in the match, while Adair Melton, Karsyn Mundy and Leslie Leonard added six kills each.


CVCC returns to action for the second day of the Valley Invitational on Saturday with a pair of games, including a 10:30 a.m. match up against No. 1 ranked Owens (Ohio). The Red Hawks also face St. Clair County (Mich.) at 3 p.m.
