Red Hawks pick up a win at Wallace State Fall Bash

HANCEVILLE, Ala. — Battling top tier talent, including three NJCAA Division I teams, the 12th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team earned one victory during this past weekend's Wallace State Fall Bash held at the Tom Drake Coliseum.

The Red Hawks (18-8) defeated the Mississippi University for Women 3-0 during the second day of the two-day tournament on Saturday.

CVCC struggled against several perennial Division I NJCAA squads, including a pair of 3-1 losses to Vincennes University, Ind. (26-6) and host Wallace State (29-8). Catawba Valley was also swept 3-0 by Division I Coastal Alabama-Bay Minette (19-5).

Below are the results from the matches:

Vincennes University 3, CVCC 1

The Red Hawks dropped their opening match of the Wallace State Bash to the Trailblazers on Friday afternoon.

Set scores were 18-25, 25-18, 25-18 and 25-22.

Karsyn Mundy paced Catawba Valley with 12 kills in a balanced offensive attack. Leslie Leonard (11 kills) and Adair Melton (10) also reached double digits in kills, and Sabrina Pinard added nine kills.

CVCC's Emilee Webber assisted on 38 of those kills — a season high for the freshman.

Defensively, Emily Williams led the Red Hawks with 24 digs, while Webber and Katie Rupp added 20 and 19 digs each, respectively.

Wallace State 3, CVCC 1

In the second meeting between the two schools this season, the Lions once again got the better of the Red Hawks on the volleyball court, winning in four sets.

Set scores were 25-14, 25-22, 18-25 and 25-14.

Adair Melton paced CVCC with 11 kills in the match, while Leslie Leonard added eight kills and 2.5 blocks. Emily Williams also made 29 digs defensively for Catawba Valley, and Emilee Webber made 26 assists.

CVCC 3, Mississippi University for Women 0

Dominating the first two sets, the Red Hawks held off the Owls in the third set to earn a sweep and their first win of the Wallace State Bash during their first tournament game of the day on Saturday.

Set scores were 25-6, 25-7 and 25-23.

Karsyn Mundy paced CVCC with 10 kills in the match, while Mikayla Creswell added seven kills.

The Red Hawks' Emilee Webber assisted on 27 kills.

Defensively, Catawba Valley's Emily Williams made 13 digs, while Kara Williams added 11 digs.

Coastal Alabama-Bay Minette 3, CVCC 0

The Red Hawks closed out the Wallace State Fall Bash with a loss Saturday afternoon to the Division I Sun Chiefs.

Adair Melton paced CVCC with eight kills, while Karsyn Mundy and Mallory Bailey added seven and six kills each, respectively.

Emily Williams paced Catawba Valley on defense with 18 digs, while Sabrina Pinard made 12 digs. Emilee Webber also made 25 assists for CVCC.


The Red Hawks will try to extend their Region X record to 10-0 when they return to action on Tuesday when the travel to take on conference foe USC Lancaster. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
