Red Hawks sweep Pioneers in 2018 season opener

HICKORY, N.C. — The 13th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team powered its way to a 3-0 season-opening victory against visiting Spartanburg Methodist on Tuesday night at the Tarlton Complex.

Set scores were 25-15, 25-16 and 25-20.  Highlight video below!

Freshman Sage Harrington paced the Red Hawks (1-0) with 10 kills and two blocks, while teammate Emma Clark added six kills, four blocks and two aces.

After powering its way to a 10-point set one win against SMC, Catawba Valley capitalized on its serve to pull away in set two.

The Red Hawks tallied seven of their 11 aces in the match during set two, including two apiece by Rachel Delcamp and Emily Williams. Delcamp led Catawba Valley with a team-high four aces in the match.

Trailing 12-9 early in set three, CVCC once again utilized its serve effectively, rallying behind the serve of Clark, who had back-to-back aces, to pull back ahead for good in the set en route to Red Hawks' first win of the 2018 campaign.

The CVCC volleyball team returns to action this weekend when it travels to Perrysburg, Ohio for the Owens Community College Invitational.

The No. 13 Red Hawks play perennial Division II power in No. 2 Parkland College at 11:45 a.m. Friday followed by a 1:30 p.m. match against St. Clair County Community College (Mich.).

Catawba Valley wraps up its tournament appearance with matches Saturday against Vincennes University (Ind.) at 10 a.m. and versus Glen Oaks Community College (Mich.) at 1:30 p.m.
