Red Hawks go 2-0 on first day of X-travaganza

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team earned a pair of sweeps during the first day of the Region X-travaganza at the Tarlton Complex on Friday.

The Red Hawks (6-6) shut out both Bryant & Stratton and Wake Tech to improve to 3-0 in Region X play.

Behind dominant defense, the Red Hawks blanked the Bobcats during their opening match of the 5th Annual Region X-travaganza on Friday afternoon.

Set scores were 25-11, 25-15 and 25-13.

As a team, Catawba Valley tallied 18 aces in the match with freshman Macy Pope leading the charge with five aces. Fellow freshman Zoe Phillips added four aces — all of them coming in the early stages of set two — and sophomore libero Emily Williams chipped in three aces.

The Red Hawks were also stout at the net with middle hitter Emma Clark earning five blocks (four assisted), and Siena Naotala added four blocks and a team-high six kills in the match.

The Red Hawks closed out a successful first day of the Region X-travaganza with a three-set sweep against the Eagles on Friday afternoon at the Tarlton Complex.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-13 and 25-18.

Rachel Delcamp paced Catawba Valley with 10 kills, while Emma Clark and Siena Naotala added seven and six kills each, respectively.

Defensively, Emily Williams tallied a team-high 18 digs and teammates Macy Pope (10 digs) and Delcamp (13) also reached double-digits in digs.


The Red Hawks return to action for day two of the Region X-travaganza on Saturday. CVCC faces Pitt at 10:30 a.m. followed by two afternoon match ups against Surry and Louisburg at 1:30 and 3 p.m., respectively.
