Williams reaches 1,000 digs; Red Hawks top Titans

HICKORY, N.C. — On a night when sophomore libero Emily Williams reached a career milestone, the Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team stretched its win streak to nine-straight matches with a 3-0 victory against Guilford Tech at the Tarlton Complex.

Set scores were 25-14, 25-18 and 25-13.

The Red Hawks also extend their win streak to 119-straight matches in Region X play.

Williams was honored during the first set of Tuesday's conference match for not only becoming the fourth Red Hawk volleyball player to surpass 1,000 career digs, but also for moving up to second all-time on the career digs list.

"Since I never got to reach that goal in high school, it was really special that I got to celebrate it here in college," Williams said. "It meant a lot. I'm honored really. A lot of great people have passed through this program. Knowing that I'm towards the top is an awesome feeling."

Williams tallied 13 digs in Tuesday's match — moving her career total to 1,028 digs. She trails only former CVCC standout Katelyn Houser in career digs (1,703).

"Emily has worked really hard," said CVCC head volleyball coach Shannon Hudson. "She is such a competitor. We are really proud of her."

Emma Clark led CVCC offensively in Tuesday's victory with eight kills, while Sage Harrington, Rachel Delcamp, Chesney Millsaps and Na-Diea Atkins added three kills apiece. Macy Pope assisted on a team-high 11 kills and added 11 digs.

As a team, the Red Hawks tallied 15 aces, including four apiece from Emilee Webber and Madi Bolch.

The Red Hawks return to the court this Friday and Saturday when they host the 4th Annual Valley Invitational at the Tarlton Complex. Catawba Valley's first match of the event takes place at noon Friday against D-III powerhouse Owens.

CVCC also faces St. Johns River State (3 p.m. Friday), Wallace State (6 p.m. Friday), Pasco-Hernando State (10:30 a.m. Saturday) and South Florida State (3 p.m. Saturday) during the two-day event.
