
BURLINGTON - The CVCC Red Hawks fell in the first round game of the Region X/Southeast District Tournament 7-10 to the #5 seed Wake Tech. The Red Hawks rallied from being down 8-0 to out score the Eagles from Wake Tech 7-2 but it wasn't enough to overcome the 8 runs scored in the first 4 innings of the game. Red Hawks starter Charles Hall took the loss after going 1.1 innings pitched giving up 7 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks. The Red Hawks relied on the bullpen to limit the Eagles to 3 runs after Hall was lifted.
The Red Hawks offense caught on fire late and finished with 14 hits, 1 more than Wake Tech's 13. Craig Zalewa paced the Red Hawks offense going 3-4 with a double and 2 run homerun. Zalewa scored 2 runs and knocked in 2 rbi with a walk. Channing Painton and Brandon Ford both logged a two hit game with both hitting solo homeruns.
The Eagles used 5 walks and 3 hits to score 5 runs in the top of the 5th and then scored 2 more runs in the top of the 2nd on a two run homerun. The Eagles scored 1 run in the 4th, 6th and 7th to give them their 10 runs.
Seth Hubbard was able to score the Red Hawks first run in the bottom of the fourth on a Ford groundout. The Red Hawks big inning came in the 6th where a 2 run homerun by Zalewa started off the scoring and a Painton single scored Walker Smith from second to get the Red Hawks within 5 runs.
The Red Hawks were able to score 1 run in the 7th, 8th and 9th to draw closer. In the 7th Ford hit a solo shot to right center that landed on the roof of the building next to the stadium, while Painton hit his solo shot in the 8th. The Red Hawks rallied in the 9th not giving up and a Smith single allowed Zalewa to score. The Red Hawks had two runners on before a strikeout ended the game.
The Red Hawks will play the loser of the #1 Patrick Henry vs. #8 New River game tomorrow at 1:00pm in the losers bracket. The Red Hawks still have hope to return to the World Series as the tournament is double elimination format.
