Red Hawks complete sweep of Bantams, start 4-0

UNION, S.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team completed a four-game sweep against USC Union on Sunday, winning both games of a second-straight doubleheader against the Bantams at Sarratt-Whitener Field.

Game one: CVCC 14, USC Union 3 (five innings)

The Red Hawks erupted for 13 hits at the plate, including three off the bat of Trent Jones, to earn the run-rule victory against the Bantams in the opening game of the doubleheader on Sunday.

R.J. Conner and Sabion Thomas led CVCC (3-0) with three RBI each, while Jackson Brown and Brett Eurey tallied two each.

Eurey also connected on his first career home run — a solo shot to left field in the top of the third inning.

On the mound, Red Hawks starting pitcher Timothy Davila allowed one hit, one unearned run, three walks and struck out three batters in three innings of work to earn his first win of the season.

Red Hawk pitchers Chris Banks, Noah Eaker and Davila combined to allow just three hits and one earned run in the contest.

Game two: CVCC 3, USC Union 2 (seven innings)

Kevin Gonzalez delivered a clutch two-RBI hit in the fourth inning and pitcher Myles White closed out a bases loaded situation in the seventh inning, securing CVCC's one-run victory against the Bantams in the doubleheader finale on Sunday.

Despite a stout performance from Red Hawks starter Trae Starnes, the Bantams cracked the scoreboard first in the third inning, scoring an unearned run on a sac bunt from Justin Kerosetz, plating Dez Good.

The Red Hawks answered quickly when Gonzalez plated Vinny Consolo and Jamie Sheek on a two-out, two-RBI double to left field that put Catawba Valley ahead for good in the contest.

Consolo added an insurance run on a fielder's choice in the top of the sixth inning, scoring catcher Javier Socorro to make it a 3-1 CVCC lead.

However, the Bantams fought back to load the bases in the ninth inning, scoring one run on a wild pitch.

However, relief pitcher White was able to force USC Union's Preston Farmer to fly out to Sheek in foul territory to end the game.

The CVCC baseball team returns to action this weekend when it faces DI powerhouse Walters State. The Red Hawks and Senators play a doubleheader consisting of two seven-inning games on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. before playing a single nine-inning game on Sunday at noon.
