HICKORY, N.C. — The 20th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College baseball team snapped a 14-game winning streak by seventh-ranked DIII team Rockingham Community College with a 7-6 victory at Henkel-Alley Field on Tuesday.

With the win, the Red Hawks improve to 23-12 overall on the season.

Designated hitter Sabion Thomas led CVCC in its win, driving in two runs on two hits, while center fielder Brett Eurey and shortstop Mason Lyda also recorded two hits apiece.

On the mound, Catawba Valley starting pitcher Andrew picked up his fourth win of the season. He allowed four hits, three walks and a season-high 11 strikeouts.

Rockingham (20-5) took an early 1-0 lead in Tuesday's contest, driving in a run on a single by shortstop Garrett Hladliek in the second inning.

However, the Red Hawks responded by scoring the game's next seven runs — starting with an RBI double by Eurey in the bottom of the third inning.

CVCC added two more runs in the fifth inning — both on fielder's choice RBIs by Thomas and left fielder Jackson Brown.

The biggest inning of the game for the Red Hawks came in the sixth when they plated four runs, including a two-RBI double by Thomas and an RBI sac fly by second baseman R.J. Conner.

Down 7-1 late in the game, the Eagles wouldn't go away quietly, scoring five runs in the final three innings.

Second baseman Zack Mcginnis got the late-game scoring going for the Eagles in the seventh inning on an RBI single.

Rockingham would attempt the comeback bid in the ninth inning and eventually loaded the bases, but came up one run shy of sending the contest into extra innings.

Designated hitter Kelsey Weems and catcher Christian Ruff both had RBI singles to lead the ninth-inning charge for the Eagles.

The CVCC baseball team competes again on Wednesday afternoon — this time on the road against DI Florence Darlington Tech in Columbia, S.C.

First pitch between the Red Hawks and Stingers at the Lexington Blowfish Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
