HICKORY, N.C. — For the first time in program history, the Catawba Valley Community College baseball program has three national weekly award winners.

Red Hawks freshman pitcher Blake Dockery was named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DII Pitcher of the Week on Wednesday.

Dockery joins teammates Trent Jones and Willie Gordon as weekly award winners, and he becomes the first pitcher since Julian Smith to win the weekly pitching honor from the NJCAA.

"I feel like me getting that (weekly award) kind of shows all of the hard work all of our pitchers have put in all season as a staff," Dockery said of his honor. "It's pretty cool to see that."

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Dockery had yet another dominant start on the mound this past weekend, allowing just two hits, one unearned run, one walk and striking out eight batters in a complete game performance that helped CVCC earn a 4-1 victory against conference foe Guilford Tech.

Dockery has been stellar on the mound during his first season in a Red Hawk uniform, twice tying the school single-game record for strikeouts with 14 — once on March 2 against Region X rival Pitt and again on April 6 against another conference opponent in Southeastern-Whiteville.

Dockery has struck out at least eight batters in six of his 10 starts this season — helping to guide a CVCC pitching staff that has broken its single-season record for strikeouts and currently leads the nation in punch outs among DII schools (508 total).

The freshman from Harrisburg, N.C. ranks statistically as one of the best pitchers in the nation in Division II. His 1.04 is second-best among DII arms, while his 77 strikeouts rank him 10th nationally.

This is the second-straight season that the CVCC baseball program has received an NJCAA weekly honor for both a pitcher and position player.
