Conner’s slam, Dockery’s Ks lifts Red Hawks past Titans

GREENVILLE, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team stayed alive in Region 10/Southeast District tournament play on Saturday morning with an 8-0 victory in consolation action against Guilford Tech.

With the win, the Red Hawks improve to 33-20 overall on the season.

The Titans, who are eliminated with the loss, end their season with a 17-17 overall record.

CVCC pitcher Blake Dockery allowed just three GTCC hits and struck out 12 batters — his fourth outing this season with at least 10 strikeouts.

At the plate, Red Hawks shortstop R.J. Conner had two hits and two runs scored, and he homered for the second-straight day — this time a grand slam that was part of a six-run fifth inning.

Designated hitter Sabion Thomas, first baseman Trent Jones and second baseman Ryan Healy also drove in one run each to lead Catawba Valley in its seven-inning, run-rule victory.

The CVCC baseball team will attempt to keep its season going on Sunday when it battles second-seeded Paul D. Camp (29-15), which lost a 12-4 contest to Pitt in the tournament semifinals on Saturday night.

The Red Hawks and Hurricanes split the only two games they played against each other earlier this season on Feb. 24.

The winner between CVCC and PDCC will play again at 7 p.m., while the losing team's season will end.

**UPDATE on Sunday's game - CVCC will now play PDC at noon instead of 1 p.m. due to the threat of inclement weather**
