Red Hawks’ 2019 baseball season come to an end

GREENVILLE, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team had its season end on Sunday during its third game of the Region 10/Southeast District tournament, falling 12-4 to Paul D. Camp at the Minges-Overton Complex.

The Red Hawks finish their 2018-19 season with a 33-21 overall record.

The Hurricanes (30-15) used two home runs in the first three innings to grab early control of Sunday's elimination game. First baseman Sam Camacho delivered a two-run home run to right center field during the first inning, while second baseman Thomas Fox added a solo home run to left field in the third inning.

CVCC responded to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning with a three-run home run by third baseman Grant Tilley, which scored teammates Sabion Thomas and Trent Jones.

Paul D. Camp once again used the long ball in the top of the sixth inning to gain the lead for good in Sunday's contest. Third baseman Tannor Sullivan delivered a two-run home run to left field — giving the Hurricanes a 5-3 advantage.

Left fielder Jackson Brown helped Catawba Valley pull back within 5-4, driving in teammate R.J. Conner on a double to right field.

However, the Hurricanes added two runs in the seventh inning and five in the eighth to earn the tournament victory. Shortstop Darnell Lardge recorded a pair of run-scoring singles, Camacho addd three RBIs to his five-RBI day and left fielder Rufus Hurdle drove in a run on an RBI sac fly.

Second baseman Ryan Healy led the Red Hawks offensively in Sunday's contest. Healy tallied three hits, including a pair of doubles. Tilley and Jackson also recorded two hits apiece.

Sunday's game was the final for 14 Red Hawk sophomores, including Chase Covington, Trent Jones, Rod Munoz, Chris Banks, Garrison Burress, R.J. Conner, Timothy Davila, Trae Starnes, Myles White, Nic Messina, Logan Bender, Greg Collins, Tyler Campbell and Willie Gordon.
