Red Hawks sweep Saturday doubleheader with Eagles

HICKORY, N.C. — The 15th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College baseball team swept a home conference doubleheader on Saturday with visiting Wake Tech at Henkel-Alley Field at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds.

With the wins, the Red Hawks improve their record to 10-5 overall and 6-2 in Region 10 action.

Overcoming an early 5-1 deficit, the Red Hawks powered their way past the Eagles to win the opener of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

Catcher Colt Byars led the Red Hawks, hitting the go-ahead grand slam during the fourth inning.

Left fielder Jackson Brown also hit a home run for CVCC and drove in four RBI, while Red Hawks shortstop Kye Andress connected on a solo home run in the second inning.

On the mound, Catawba Valley pitcher Noah Eaker relieved starter Mason Herbert in the second inning and pitched 4.2 innings to earn his first win of the season.

Eaker allowed two hits, three runs, three walks and struck out six batters.

The Red Hawks collected 12 hits at the plate and starting pitcher Blake Dockery held Eagle bats to only two hits in a six-inning, run-rule victory during Saturday's finale.

First baseman Sabion Thomas led CVCC with three hits, finished a home run short of the cycle.

Thomas, shortstop Kye Andress and outfielder Malik Stephens all drove in two RBI each in the contest.

On the mound, Dockery recorded his fourth complete game in as many outings. He allowed two hits, three walks and struck out eight batters to improve to 4-0 on the season.


The Red Hawks and Eagles complete their three-game set on Sunday with a single nine-inning game starting at noon at Henkel-Alley Field.
